Calling All Booksellers!
We sodding love booksellers here at And Other Stories, even though you’re indirectly responsible for the sorry state of our respective bank balances. You guys are tastemakers every bit as much as critics and bloggers, masters at producing those pithy summaries that convince us our lives will be tragically bereft if we don’t buy book X, even if said purchase will mean another week eking out a £1.10 tin of pilchards over 4 meals (cue tiny violin). So who better, we thought, to source advance quotes from to print at the very front of one of our upcoming titles, and give booksellers the credit they deserve? And what better title to get the ball rolling than Yuri Herrera’s Signs Preceding the End of the World?
To say we’re excited about Signs would be an understatement on the level of saying that the England World Cup team generally tend not quite to live up to expectations. But we’re not the only ones. Word has already gotten out – Yuri Herrera is the Real Deal:
- ‘Yuri Herrera is Mexico’s greatest novelist. Signs Preceding the End of the World delivers a darkly mythological vision of the U.S. as experienced by the “not us” that is harrowing and fierce. The profoundly dignified, mind-boggling Makina, our guide and translator, is the heroine who redeems us all: she is the Truth.’ Francisco Goldman, author of Say Her Name
- ‘Yuri Herrera’s Signs Preceding the End of the World is a masterpiece, a haunting and moving allegory about violence and the culture built to support and celebrate that violence. Of the writers of my generation, the one I most admire is Yuri Herrera.’ Daniel Alarcón, author of At Night We Walk in Circles
-
“Like a Mexican Cesar Aira, Herrera packs energy, wit, and weight into this frantic tale about so much more than crossing the Rio Grande. His vivid outsider’s perspective continually tells us things about America that we’re no longer capable of seeing.” Scott Esposito, The Quarterly Conversation
Yeah. We know. And if you’re lucky enough to be a member of the noble profession of booksellers, hit us up via email and we’ll send you the PDFs quicker than you can say “Mexico’s greatest novelist”. And anyone – and everyone – can, and should, subscribe. You do NOT want to miss this book.
LAST CALL: Booksellers, your quotes are needed by the end of Sunday 27th July if you’d like to be alongside other great booksellers / bookstores (eg Foyles, London; Porter Square Books, Boston; Posman Books, New York) at the start of this book, forever! So email stefantobler@andotherstories.org before the weekend if you need a galley pdf.
