One of the things that’s most impressed us about Sworn Virgin author Elvira Dones, aside from the quality of her writing, is that she hasn’t just used the lives of Albania’s sworn virgins as a ‘theme’ for her book, only to set it aside and think no more about it once the inspiration was achieved. Instead, she took the trouble to really educate herself as to the reality faced by these women, and the complex cultural context in which the phenomena exists – this fascinating documentary, screened as part of the Baltimore Women’s Film Festival, was one of the results.
