Mmmm…that new book smell.
Won a giveaway on Goodreads and today my book arrived. Just in time too, since I’m Southbound on Monday. So thanks very much, & Other Stories.
When Hana’s dying uncle calls her home from the city, he asks her to marry a local boy in order to run the household. Unable to accept the arranged marriage but resolved to remain independent, she must vow in accordance with Albanian tradition to live the rest of her life in chastity as a man.
I’d never heard of this Albanian tradition before, but a quick search reveals a number of documentaries available on youtube, but I’ll wait to watch those once I finish this book. The jacket informs me a film of Sworn Virgin is due out this year and lo and behold, here is is on the Cannes website.
It’s an intriguing premise and I’m looking forward to sinking my teeth into something new. It even fits in with my wee challenge– to read more translated works.
