That time of the year has come again, the autumn Portuguese-language reading group is here! Our three titles this time are by three brilliant Portuguese authors – and for the first time we are including non-fiction. And all are from the great independent publisher Tinta-da-china.
Our three carefully chosen titles are: O Retorno (The Return), by Dulce Maria Cardoso, Viva México (Viva Mexico), by Alexandra Lucas Coelho, and Agora e na Hora da Nossa Morte (Now and at the Hour of our Death), by Susana Moreira Marques.
As we venture into the realms of non-fiction, why not travel all the way to Mexico with Alexandra Lucas Coelho and her backpack? We hear she’s got some poets for company. Or join Susana Moreira Marques on her journey deep into the Portuguese countryside as she follows a medical team which provides palliative care to patients that live in remote villages of difficult access. Apparently, Johnny Cash’s ‘25 Minutes to Go’ is the perfect road song. If you are looking for fiction, Dulce Maria Cardoso’s novel is definitely a must-read: a story of change and loss from one of Portugal’s most lauded and read writers: a family is forced to leave Angola and move to Portugal during the decolonisation process which followed the Portuguese revolution.
