About the event

To celebrate our arrival in Sheffield, we’re launching a new book prize in partnership with New Writing North, and you’re invited to join us at 9pm on 19 October 2017 at DINA, Cambridge St, Sheffield.

It’s free to attend and open to all, and will be taking place as part of the 2017 Off The Shelf literary festival.

Why are we launching the Northern Book Prize?

We’ve just relocated to Sheffield, a city with a vibrant literary history in a region that’s bursting with great writers, and we want to demonstrate our commitment to northern writing with this new prize.

We’re on the search for the next great writer based in the North of England, as we launch the Northern Book Prize in partnership with New Writing North as part of this year’s Northern Writers’ Awards.

As our Editor Tara Tobler and Publisher Stefan Tobler say:

London is lovely but it isn’t a heal-all. It’s not necessary to be there. We hope to tap some of the extraordinary literary energy in the North and are confident the prize will only grow in prestige and popularity in the years to come.

The launch event is an opportunity to come along and be there at the beginning of what we hope will be a great literary story for the North of England, and for Sheffield in particular.

The event will also be a great party, to say thank you to the literary and cultural community across the North for welcoming us with open arms. The independent, innovative spirit of Sheffield is part of what attracted us here, and we want to celebrate our move.

Think you could be the next Sunjeev Sahota, Fiona Mozley or Benjamin Myers? We’ll be announcing the judges and sharing more details at the launch, but here’s a brief overview:

The Prize opens for submissions on 16 November and closes on 1 February 2018. The winning writer will be revealed at the Northern Writers’ Awards ceremony, to be held in Newcastle in June 2018. We’re aiming to launch the winning book during Off the Shelf 2018.

The winner of the Northern Book Prize will receive:

  • £5,000 prize/advance
  • Creative editorial support from And Other Stories to develop the manuscript if needed
  • A contract for the book’s worldwide publication, distribution and representation from And Other Stories.
  • Developmental opportunities offered by New Writing North through the Northern Writers’ Awards.

The Northern Book Prize will form part of New Writing North’s Northern Writers’ Awards, which have supported hundreds of writers to develop creatively and connect with the writing industry since 2000. The Awards are supported by Northumbria University, Newcastle and Arts Council England and are open to writers based in the North of England.

Claire Malcolm, chief executive of New Writing North says:

We are delighted to be working with And Other Stories on the Northern Book Prize. We know from our experiences running the Northern Writers’ Awards that there’s a huge range of exciting and diverse talent in the North of England. We’re looking forward to welcoming submissions to this wonderful new prize, which will provide the winning writer with a unique, valuable and career-changing opportunity.

The Northern Book Prize launch follows Joanna Walsh’s Off the Shelf event, where she’ll be in conversation with Rachel Genn about her new short story collection Worlds From The Word’s End.

You’ll also have the chance to win a six-book subscription to And Other Stories titles!

Looking forward to seeing you on 9pm on 19 October 2017 at DINA, Cambridge St, Sheffield!
