Mother – Daughter Love Hurts:
Winner of the 2018 Northern Book Prize, debut author of Slip of a Fish (And Other Stories, 2018), Amy Arnold will be in conversation with author of Fallow with Crocodile (Sandstone Press, 2018), Daniel Shand.
Ash collects words, climbs trees and swims in a deserted lake with her beloved seven-year-old, Charlie. Bemused by everyday life, she has a rich and singular interior world. Over the course of a relentlessly hot summer, Charlie begins to pull away, and in a desperate attempt to reconnect with her daughter Ash does something unforgivable. As the gulf between them grows, Ash’s life begins to slip out of her hold. Slip of a Fish by Amy Arnold
She’s remembering curtains closed against whatever might harm them and all the knick-knacks: the porcelain fairy, the chain of rubber dolphins, CDs piled a metre high. This was what home meant.
It’s the summer before high school and Chloe’s been sent to her grandparents because her mother can’t cope. At first, all Chloe wants is to go home, but when she falls in with a feral gang of local boys, life takes a darker turn. By the time summer ends, Chloe will have learned where the greater danger lies. Fallow with Crocodile by Daniel Shand
