Biography
Luís Cardoso (Cailaco, 1958) is an East Timorese writer who lives and works in Portugal. Although Cardoso has since published several novels, he made his debut in 1997 with Crónica de uma travessia, a memoir of growing up in exile from his homeland, published in English as The Crossing, in Margaret Jull Costa’s translation, in 2002. In 2021, Cardoso’s sixth novel, O Plantador de Abóboras, was awarded first place for the prestigious Oceanos Prize.
