And Other Stories Seeks Literary Fiction Editor – Maternity Cover

Book stack horizontal

We at And Other Stories are looking for an intelligent and passionate literary fiction editor to join our team on a 1-year fixed-term contract basis. This is a maternity cover, starting in January 2018 or earlier, for a minimum of 12 months.

The editor will work closely with authors and translators to provide line-edits on approximately 9 books, consulting texts in original languages as needed. He/she will also work closely with the And Other Stories team to ensure timely delivery of manuscripts for production. Other duties may include: copy-editing and copy-writing, proofreading, soliciting endorsements, suggesting comparison titles, preparing art briefs for jacket design, and taking part in the wider activities of the company as required, including our Northern Book Prize and our upcoming publishing open days and traineeships focused on people from backgrounds under-represented in publishing.

The successful applicant for this 3-day/week maternity cover position will have:

  • Successful experience of editing a good number of works of literary fiction to the highest professional standard;
  • Exceptional skills as a reader. We expect an ear both attuned to individual nuances of tone and familiar with the variety of sentence structures employed in dynamic contemporary fiction;
  • Exceptional skills as a writer. For this position we seek someone capable of restructuring texts in a manner at once elegant, faithful, minimal, creative, and essential;
  • The ability to provide detailed feedback that is constructive, motivating and honest;
  • A strong technical understanding of grammar, preferably across a number of languages;
  • Familiarity with the act of translation and the courage to engage actively with its challenges;
  • Familiarity with the Oxford Guide to Style/Hart’s Rules and other writing and proofreading reference works;
  • Strong MS Office skills, particularly the Track Changes feature of Microsoft Word;
  • An ability to navigate and create marked-up PDFs in Adobe Reader;
  • Some familiarity with InDesign and/or the processes of typesetting and of print production would also be an asset.

As the company develops and continues to grow, we hope there will be the opportunity to transition to full-time permanent work, if desired.

And Other Stories, a charter member of Equality in Publishing (EQUIP), welcome applications from any individual regardless of ethnic origin, gender, disability, religious belief, sexual orientation or age. All applications will be considered on merit.
