To celebrate our arrival in Sheffield, we’re launching a new book prize in partnership with New Writing North. Entries for the 2018 prize close at 11:59pm on 1 February 2018.

Why are we launching the Northern Book Prize?

We’ve just relocated to Sheffield, a city with a vibrant literary history in a region that’s bursting with great writers, and we want to demonstrate our commitment to northern writing with this new prize.

We’re on the search for great books by great writers based in the North of England, as we launch the Northern Book Prize in partnership with New Writing North as part of this year’s Northern Writers’ Awards.

As our Editor Tara Tobler and Publisher Stefan Tobler say:

London is lovely but it isn’t a heal-all. It’s not necessary to be there. We hope to tap some of the extraordinary literary energy in the North and are confident the prize will only grow in prestige and popularity in the years to come.

Think you could be the next Sunjeev Sahota, Fiona Mozley or Benjamin Myers?

The Prize opens for submissions on 16 November 2017 and closes on 1 February 2018. The winning writer will be revealed at the Northern Writers’ Awards ceremony, to be held in Newcastle in June 2018. We’re aiming to launch the winning book during Off the Shelf 2018. Unlike most awards that are part of the Northern Writers’ Awards, the Northern Book Prize is very much open to established as well as new authors.
