And Other Stories awarded increased Arts Council England funding

We’re absolutely delighted and proud to announce that And Other Stories has been awarded an uplift in funding from Arts Council England (ACE), as we remain one of ACE’s National Portfolio Organisations.

The highest level of literary achievement occurs when artists know the cultures, languages and ideas of multiple places. English-language literature built on cultural exchange. We share these values with our funder ACE, whose Creative Case for Diversity asserts the integral importance of difference to Britain’s richly creative culture.

ACE’s increased financial support (from £40k p.a. to £74k p.a. for the next four years, April 2018 to April 2022) provides us with a bedrock of support to continue to publish adventurous, quality literature, to improve authors’ and translators’ livelihoods, and to support routes into the publishing industry from all sectors of society. Following recent years’ subscriber and retail sales growth (over 100% sales growth in the UK and 60% sales growth in North America last year), the increased ACE support is projected 16% to be of our income for 2018-2022. Importantly, it is guaranteed income, and provides the medium-term stability to let us choose books on literary merit alone and guarantee a minimum advance of £2,500 for British authors, and to work more widely with partners including libraries. We will also grow our list to 15 books / year.

The uplift in funding will also support our continuing to play a part in changing publishing. There will be programmes to encourage people from under-represented groups to work in publishing, including regular open days about publishing and yearlong traineeships. We are launching a guest editor program in partnership with BAME authors, and from our new home in Sheffield we are looking forward to exciting partnerships in the North, including a prize for Northern fiction to be launched soon. We can’t wait!
