And Other Stories, CIC, establishes US presence: hires Sarah Russo of SRPR to head publicity and partners with Consortium Distribution to launch first North American list.
New York, NY, April 2013—Beginning with the Autumn/Winter 2013/14 list, Consortium Book Sales & Distribution will distribute the critically acclaimed books of And Other Stories, an independent British publishing company who have just set up a base in New York. Launched less than two years ago, And Other Stories has been hailed as “a wonderful enterprise” (Jonathan Lethem), “inspired” (Ali Smith), and “add[ing] a new dimension to publishing” (The Guardian). We are the first publisher of Deborah Levy’s Man Booker Prize-nominated Swimming Home, and Juan Pablo Villalobos’s Down the Rabbit Hole (shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award), as well as the UK publisher of American author Helen DeWitt’s Lightning Rods (just shortlisted for the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction).
And Other Stories is a CIC: a community interest company. It was established as a for-profit-business structure, but one motivated by goals that provide a cultural benefit and whose profits primarily benefit the community. And Other Stories shows a sincere commitment to social responsibility in its work to support reading groups, libraries and booksellers, and challenges the view of literary culture as being simply about numbers of books sold. Its adventurous list of books includes much in translation and is supported by over 1,000 advance subscribers.
From April 2013, And Other Stories will have a New York desk headed up by Sarah Russo of SRPR. Ms Russo founded Sarah Russo Public Relations in 2011 after twelve years working in-house at Knopf, Doubleday, Other Press, Farrar, Straus & Giroux and Oxford University Press. She is And Other Stories’ North American director of publicity, while Rosamund Hutchison is UK & Ireland director of publicity for And Other Stories.
“I’m absolutely thrilled Sarah Russo and Rosamund Hutchison have joined our team. They’re experienced publicists and sensitive readers. Equally I’m thrilled that our books are going to be available to the North American trade. We’ve discovered some fantastic books – from now on we’ll be able to get our discoveries to many more readers in North America,” said Stefan Tobler, founder and publisher of And Other Stories.
